Set Up an Education Sector Log In (ESL)

Not sure who the ESL delegated authoriser of your school or kura is? Ask a colleague, your Principal or contact the Education Service Desk.. That person must then either update your existing account or invite you to create a new ESL account. You will need to be assigned the PLD Teacher Aide permissions in ESL.

File Your Funding Application

Apply for the funding for your PLD through the online form. 

 

Select the "Set Category" option  from the application type - you'll need:

  • The email address of the person approving the PLD.

  • Your Ministry employee number and your school number (find on your pay slip)

Funding Approved

You will receive a confirmation email from the Ministry (remember to check your spam folder for a reply too).

 

Please forward this and your ARN (application reference number) to us to complete your enrolment in your course.

 

We will then be your primary contact for all details about your chosen course.

Developing Phonological Awareness (P/S) 

In this workshop you will understand what phonological awareness is and its importance in learning literacy.  You will learn how you can develop phonological awareness with students using quick, fun learning activities and how to assess phonological awareness. Includes a Developing Phonological Awareness manual.

Early Phonics (Learning the Alphabet)
(P)

Much more than ABC's this course will give you the practical strategies and in-depth training on how to teach children the sounds and letters of the alphabet.

Includes a down-loadable Early  Phonics training manual.

Early Words (P)

Build understanding about what the high frequency (sight) words are and why we teach them, learn how to teach a 5 minute Early Words lesson and know how to implement the Early Words programme in your school.

Reading Discovery Club (P)

Learn how to set up a Reading Discovery Club that provides a 30 minute, small group early literacy support programme for your school.

Primary Phonics (P)

Build an understanding about what phonics is and develop an understanding of the 7 stage of phonics. You will learn how to teach children to hear, read and write all the sounds and how to sound out the words for reading and writing using fun and interactive strategies and how to assess the 7 stages.

Teaching Handwriting (P/S)

In this workshop, Louise will cover the following topics:

- Introduction – why teaching handwriting matters
- Developing fine motor skills 
- Teaching handwriting systematically
- Supporting older students with handwriting issues.

Supporting Students with Reading (P/S)

This workshop introduces the range of skills students need to develop for reading. It includes practical strategies to support students to decode and comprehend, as well as follow-up activities. Louise will also cover how to lead a reading group at different levels.

Supporting Students with Writing (P/S)

An overview of how children learn to write with practical strategies for supporting ākonga with the writing process.   It includes practical strategies to support students to generate and organise ideas, spell words, write in sentences, select vocabulary and edit their writing. Supporting groups of students at different levels will also be covered.

 Supporting Ākonga in a Structured Literacy Classroom - open category

These workshops will support TAs who are working in learning spaces with Structured Literacy in place. There are two different workshops: for supporting ākonga in Years 1-3, and Years 4-8. 

The course will cover:  

- Brief introduction the foundations and principles of structured literacy.

- A range of practical strategies for supporting ākonga in small group literacy instruction, including: Phonemic awareness, decoding, letter formation, spelling, high frequency words, and book reading. Workshops for Year 4-8 TAs will also include multi-syllable word reading, and reading fluency development. Participants will receive a printable workbook for the course, which will include step-by-step instructions for teaching strategies we cover.

Supporting Ākonga in the Learning Space with Oral Language Development  (P/S)

Build a rich understanding about why oral language is important, gain skills to support individual and small groups of ākonga and how to leverage ākonga linguistic diversity in the learning space.

Supporting Ākonga in the Learning Space with Oral Language Development and Supporting Positive Behaviour - one day combined course (P/S)

Join Del Costello and Michelle Enright in learning how to leverage ākonga linguistic diversity in the learning space and develop strategies for supporting positive behaviour. Apply for funding for the separate courses but attend both in one day.

Exploring the key features of different numeracy stages and how to go about proceeding learners from one stage to another, utilizing the power of noticing and quality talk to promote thinking and learning.

An introduction to Assessment for Learning (AfL) - open category

What is Assessment for Learning and why is it important in a classroom? How can I support AfL?
This workshop will explore some of the key elements of Assessment for Learning, e.g. learning intentions, success criteria, feedback, and self/peer assessment. We will unpack practical AfL strategies for learning assistants and teacher aides to use when working with individual learners and small groups. If your school is an “Assessment for Learning School” then this workshop is essential to ensure all adults in your school are supporting learners to own and lead their own learning.

Strategies for Effective Feedback in the Classroom - open category

Feedback is one of the most powerful classroom tools and proven to improve student outcomes. How can learning assistants and teacher aides harness this power in the classroom?
In this workshop, we will unpack what feedback is and why it is so powerful. We will share useful everyday strategies that learning assistants and teacher aides can use when working with individual learners and small groups.

Foundational Te Reo Māori me ōna Tikanga (P/S)

This Kaupapa is specifically designed for Teacher Aides who are new to Te Reo Māori and Tikanga. Through this course you will learn

  • Sounds

  • Pronunciation

  • Simple commands

  • A mihimihi, your pepeha, waiata and himeni

  • How to give effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi

All of which you can begin to use at home, at school or in the office. So if you're looking for a safe, supportive place to start, come join Rosina. Not only will you have fun, but also learn and grow in Te Reo Māori Moana Tikanga. Rosina has worked in education for over 20 years, with vast knowledge and experience in educational leadership, management and pedagogical coaching.  Having a firm foundation of Kaupapa Māori me ona Tikanga gives Rosina the confidence to be unapologetic about putting ākonga Māori first. Honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi means honouring Te Reo Māori and tikanga. Learn the essential Te Reo Māori and tikanga required for work in the classroom.
