What can I expect?
In this interactive and practical workshop, participants will look at the three elements of early literacy (oral language, early phonemic awareness and print knowledge and preparing to write) and ways to engage Tamariki with these important skills.
What are the learning outcomes?
- Understand the elements of early literacy and what these look like in an early childhood setting
- How to plan for early literacy practices in a Tamariki lead learning setting
- How to observe and notice early literacy progress and how to plan for next steps

Early Childhood Kaiako, team leaders and centre managers
Who is the workshop facilitator?
Dr Melissa Derby. Melissa is a Senior Lecturer in child development, specialising in early literacy. She works with ECE services and the wider community to support tamariki learning through talk, local curriculum, bi-cultural frameworks and with whānau as first teachers.
