About the event
About the Workshop
Mathematics is woven throughout the everyday experiences of tamariki, from building towers and sharing kai to exploring patterns in nature. In this workshop, we explore how early mathematical thinking is embedded within Te Whāriki and how kaiako can intentionally recognise and respond to these learning moments. Participants will examine how mathematical concepts emerge naturally through play-based learning and how these moments can be made visible through thoughtful documentation.
Kaiako will also explore how intentional teaching practices can strengthen mathematical progression in early childhood settings. Through practical examples and discussion, this session will focus on noticing mathematical thinking, extending learning through purposeful questioning, and creating environments that invite exploration of number, pattern, measurement, and spatial awareness. Participants will leave with strategies that support confident, intentional integration of early maths across everyday experiences.
