Strengthening Literacy Foundations in Years 4-6
This professional learning and development (PLD) session is designed for Years 4-6 educators, focusing on ensuring all learners have strong literacy foundations to access Phase 2 teaching sequence skills. The session explores strategies for explicit instruction in phonics, morphology, handwriting, reading fluency, vocabulary, and writing development, with targeted approaches for at-risk learners.
Key areas of focus include:
Phonics and Morphology – Reviewing the phonics scope and sequence, deepening understanding of morphology, and identifying gaps in decoding and spelling to plan explicit teaching.
Handwriting and Automaticity – Exploring the importance of fine motor skills, effective letter formation techniques, and handwriting assessment.
