About the event

About the Workshop

Strong early literacy foundations are built through rich, meaningful language experiences that are embedded within everyday teaching practice. This workshop supports teachers, kaiako, and educators to deepen their understanding of early literacy and how it is intentionally fostered within Te Whāriki. Participants will explore what early literacy looks like in an early childhood setting, including how oral language, storytelling, and responsive interactions contribute to children’s communication and learning development.

Through practical exploration and reflection, participants will examine how to create language-rich environments that reflect children’s identities, cultures, interests, and strengths. The session also focuses on how to plan for early literacy within a tamariki-led curriculum, ensuring learning opportunities are authentic and engaging. Kaiako will strengthen their ability to observe and recognise early literacy, using internal evaluation practices to reflect on and improve teaching strategies, ultimately enhancing the delivery of Te Whāriki within their service.
