About the event
The Early Literacy Practices and Unpacking Kōwhiti Whakapae workshop empowers ECE educators with knowledge and strategies to support tamariki in developing essential literacy skills. Participants will explore how children learn to read, focusing on concepts of print, vocabulary expansion, phonological awareness, and letter-sound knowledge. The workshop introduces Structured Literacy (SL) and highlights the importance of phonemic awareness, with practical wordplay activities to engage tamariki. Educators will unpack Kōwhiti Whakapae, discovering how to foster literacy through shared reading, early writing concepts, and culturally responsive practices. With a focus on planning, implementation, and assessment, this workshop enhances kaiako capability and literacy outcomes.
