At Coactive Education, we are excited to announce the launch of the 2025/2026 Early Literacy PLD for Auckland North West! A Ministry of Education SELO Office–funded initiative to strengthen the professional knowledge of early childhood education (ECE) teachers and leaders in early literacy.

I’ve learned that confidence in leadership isn’t about having all the answers or being the loudest voice in the room. Real confidence comes from self-awareness, knowing your natural style, and your strengths, and seeing the moments when you might get in your own way.

From trampoline-jumping bunnies to emoji-heavy captions, we’re quick to call out AI online. But at Coactive, we’ve learned that not all AI-generated content is “slop”, in fact, we love AI! We’ve been using it alongside expertise and purpose to promote accessibility and equity for all learners.

Storytelling pedagogy is not about performance. It’s about connection, identity and the courage to teach with heart.

Early literacy is more than learning to read and write- it’s about unlocking the potential of young minds through rich language, meaningful interactions, and intentional teaching. As a Literacy Education Consultant and Structured Literacy Leader, it’s a privilege to walk alongside kaiako in both early childhood and primary settings, helping to build strong, evidence-based foundations for literacy.

I’ve observed educators meticulously plan their lessons, implement seemingly robust classroom management strategies – complete with detailed seating charts and impeccably organised resources – yet struggle to cultivate a positive and productive learning environment. Conversely, I’ve seen other teachers walk into a classroom and almost instantly establish a palpable sense of connection, with students seemingly “eating out of their hands,” eager to engage and learn.
