Screen

Build a clear picture of each learner’s oral language strengths and needs.

WellComm is an internationally recognised oral language screening and intervention toolkit that helps educators identify children's speech, language and communication needs early, respond with targeted teaching strategies and monitor progress over time. The platform provides a practical 10–15 minute oral language screen for tamariki and ākonga aged approximately six months to 11 years. Trained kaiako, teachers and learning-support staff can administer it without specialist clinical expertise. Results use a clear traffic-light system to identify strengths, support needs and possible referral pathways.

Respond

Turn screening results into purposeful, targeted teaching.

WellComm’s ready-to-use activities help educators respond directly to identified oral language needs. Support can be delivered individually, in flexible small groups or across the wider class or centre, and woven into books, play, waiata, routines and everyday conversations. Progress can then be reviewed through observation, planning and rescreening, helping teams adjust support as learners develop.

ECE Services

Support oral language from infancy through to school transition.

Express helps kaiako notice, understand and respond to children’s communication development within the everyday life of the centre. WellComm can be used alongside Te Whāriki and Kōwhiti Whakapae to inform intentional teaching, learning stories, planning and small-group support.

Guidance also helps teams consider home languages, cultural context and whānau knowledge, while building consistent centre-wide practice and clearer information to support transition to school.

Primary Schools

Identify needs early and strengthen oral language across Years 1–6.

Express supports new entrant screening and ongoing oral language development across the primary years. Teachers, teacher aides, SENCOs and learning-support teams can use WellComm results to plan classroom strategies, targeted small-group intervention and next steps for learners.

The framework also strengthens links between oral language and literacy, supports progress monitoring, and provides clearer evidence for referral discussions and wider learning-support decisions.
