What is WellComm?
WellComm is a speech, language and communication screening toolkit designed for children aged 6 months to 11 years.
It's important to understand that WellComm is a screening tool, not a diagnostic assessment. Its purpose is to identify children who may benefit from additional support with their oral language development and to guide educators towards the most appropriate next steps.
The assessment focuses on the key building blocks of oral language, including:

WellComm has been developed across two age-specific frameworks:
WellComm Early Years (6 months–6 years) focuses on foundational speech, grammar, verbal memory and early inference.
WellComm Primary (6–11 years) assesses more advanced language skills including complex vocabulary, narrative skills and social communication.
One of the biggest differences between WellComm and many other screening tools is that assessment is only the beginning. As soon as screening is complete, educators receive practical intervention activities that can be used immediately to support each child's development.
Designed for everyday teaching
One of WellComm's greatest strengths is its simplicity.
The toolkit has been developed for education professionals, not speech and language specialists. Kaiako, SENCOs, Learning Support Coordinators, teacher aides and other education professionals can confidently administer WellComm without requiring specialist qualifications.
The assessments also fit comfortably into everyday practice, so you can screen children without disrupting your teaching programme. Most take approximately 10–15 minutes per child, making them manageable alongside busy classroom programmes.
There is no specialist equipment to purchase either. All that's required is:
A computer, laptop or tablet with internet access
A quiet space to work one-to-one with a child
Everyday classroom resources such as books, toys, blocks, pencils and paper
The digital platform guides users through each activity and clearly identifies any resources required.
From Screening to Support
Identifying a need is only valuable if it leads to meaningful support.
Once a WellComm assessment is completed, results are presented using a simple traffic light system:
Green - Language development is progressing as expected.
Amber - Targeted support is recommended.
Red - Indicates significant concern and suggests further support or referral may be appropriate.
Rather than leaving educators wondering what to do next, WellComm automatically recommends intervention activities based on each child's individual profile.
Kaiako can immediately access activities through the Big Book of Ideas, WellComm's online library of practical oral language teaching strategies.
Activities are directly linked to assessment outcomes and can be incorporated into existing classroom programmes, shared with colleagues, or emailed to whānau to continue learning at home.
The platform also generates Small Group Screening Reports, allowing educators to group children with similar learning needs and deliver targeted teaching more efficiently.
Children receiving Amber or Red outcomes are typically supported through intervention before being reassessed after approximately 12 weeks, creating an ongoing cycle of:
Screen → Teach → Review → Reassess
